Learn how to add birds to a landscape painting and how to begin to see the general shape of birds. If you want to see a variety of ways to paint birds as a subject, from realistic to iconic, this workshop is for you!

Erna will begin the workshop with quick, easy shape paintings in acrylic. Students will then follow along, making shape paintings. Then, she will show how to interpret the basic bird shapes and a few techniques to begin sketches. Next, she will show how and where to add birds to paintings.

In the afternoon, Erna will demonstrate painting a bird in both a loose, simple style as well as a methodical, detailed style using both watercolor and acrylics. She will help students with their individual projects (students can bring their own photos or use what she has on hand). The wrap up will include a review of work and ways to experiment on your own!

ERNA WATERMAN
Erna is fascinated by our diversity of birds and believes you get to know a bird or an animal by sketching it. Birds and animals require more representational construction to be accurate and understood.

Erna creates a wide variety of works in her home studio/gallery in Niwot, using oils, acrylics, watercolor, collage and encaustics. Erna often paints in oils or watercolor plein-air at our local open space parks and nearby mountain vistas. Occasionally, Erna teaches art in her studio and at the Louisville Art Association.

Three years ago, Erna made a shift from her career in environmental investigations and clean-up. During her technical career she sketched and painted daily. Always mobile with a sketchbook or easel, she captures her story and shares it through @ernastudio on Instagram and on her website.

MATERIALS:

Bring a sketchbook or a few pieces of sketch paper and pencils as well as photographs of a few birds you want to sketch/paint. I will have photos as well as paper and pencils as well as acrylic and watercolor paints and some paint brushes.  Bring your own paints and brushes as well.

Oil as well as pastel painters are welcome to work in these mediums – my demos will be on paper using water based paints.
