“Designing Landscapes En Plein Air” is all about using our surroundings as inspiration to paint gorgeous masterpieces, not cookie-cutter copies. So grab your brushes and let’s go explore the great outdoors!

SCOTT ROEBUCK

Scott grew up in Chicago, and was first introduced to art by his grandfather who was an avid painter and cartoonist. Initially tennis was Scott’s passion and he spent much of his childhood on the tennis court. He continued playing tennis through college but he also became more serious about art and began to draw. His first career was as a tennis pro but in his spare time he focused on his art working in watercolor, acrylic, then oil paint. Scott then trained to be a science teacher but always made time to work on his art. The next few years Scott moved around from Chicago to Phoenix and then to the UK. This exposed him to different artists and techniques, pushing him to continually improve his own work. Now back in the US, in Colorado, he is enjoying the new landscapes that are inspiring him more than ever to experiment and hone his art skills.

PAINTING BOLD BLOOMS!
Simple Mixed Media Techniques for Bold Beautiful Flowers

First, I’d like to say we are going to have fun! I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share some ideas and techniques that I know will bring joy to your floral creations. This workshop is all about permission to play! Bring your pastels, acrylic paints, paint markers, and any collage papers you’d like to incorporate. We’ll start with a loose flower composition on paper, then we’ll begin with our first layer on your toned canvases. Bring 2 flower bouquet photo images or a real live floral bouquet!

We will be celebrating beautiful flowers, a traditional subject matter, with a playful and contemporary approach. We will trust the pull of curiosity to lead us to find fresh, new combinations. We will paint, draw, and explore the fundamentals of line, shape and mark. We will juggle the techniques of color, texture, & design. This process that I teach is a layering process, each layer adding new bold expressions to your floral composition.

JACQUE MICHELLE, EXPRESSIVE PAINTER

I teach in a no fear, no judgement atmosphere.
Many of my students are now professional artists and teachers in the Boulder Area.
The Beauty of the Planet is my profound inspiration and guide, I love to paint and enjoy sharing the passion. I’m not a replicator of nature, but I tend towards being an expressive broad strokes painter. My daily motivation…. applying color to canvas with a sense of positivity and joy!

Going Abstract: From the Familiar into the Unknown

A one day exploration of how to use a previous painting to inspire and create an abstract painting. Focus will be on the basics of what makes a successful painting by reviewing those elements that work in both representational and abstract 2 dimensional art.  There will be instruction about how to transform their source painting into a new abstract painting.

The workshop goal is to first have fun, secondly, to have the opportunity to try something new and  thirdly, to work on a successful abstract painting. Clare Scott, workshop presenter will be working in soft pastel, workshop participants should chose a painting medium with which they are already familiar.  Clare will provide be instruction and support for any artists are interested in experimenting with soft pastel.

Clare Scott

As a committed soft pastel painter, Clare Scott, uses a simple combination of pigment and binder to create a painting that expresses her love of color. Painting en plein air informs her studio work of the hues, shapes, atmosphere and the joy of being in the middle of it all. She uses a painterly style of mark making that is loose and spontaneous; evoking the wonder, feeling and beauty of being outside or focusing on the close up textures that result from magnification.

Clare has been invited to national plein air events, in Colorado, California and New Mexico as well as been accepted into national juried shows for both plein air and pastel painting. She is represented by Mary Williams Fine Arts in Boulder CO and is a juried member of the Sync Gallery in Denver, CO.

MATERIALS

  • A source painting that you like, Mim. 8×10  it does not need to be framed but if on paper it should be attached to a hard surface (tape, clips etc.).
  • Bring a painting surface paper, panel, etc. ready for a new painting. If you are trying pastel bring sanded paper, Uart 400 or your preferred grit. Or tinted Canson paper. both should be taped or clipped to a hard board to put it on an easel. If you usually paint small, try a larger size.

Regardless of your chosen medium bring a similar palette as the ’source painting’. For example if you have source painting of  red and pink flowers, bring those same red and pink hues or colors.
  • Bring water, gesso, alcohol, thiner, fixative such as SpectraFix. A medium that changes your usual painting style and surface.
