BRUSHING Through the Trees is a fun workshop that teaches some tips and tricks for efficient painting of trees and landscapes that will not look rushed. It will feel like rushing as we efficiently paint multiple trees that show spatial space to create the illusion of depth and distance using techniques like perspective and atmospheric effects to create a calm mood in beautiful landscapes.
Perfect for all levels of acrylic painters, this workshop offers a balanced mix of instruction and creative freedom. Learn easy techniques for showing depth, the rush of a waterfall or calmness of a creek. Unlock your creativity while we bRUSH through trees and create a landscape painting, either of your own design or image provided

Some of Dawn’s work:
MATERIALS:
I am not endorsing, nor receiving compensation for any supplies/brands suggested in this list. I am also not committed to any specific brand of brushes or paint for landscapes.
Painting surface:
11×14 is a good size to produce a painting or just practice techniques in a few hours, you can bring a canvas board, stretched canvas, cradle bord, whatever you want to paint on. I will be using canvas board.
Brushes:
I am showing an assortment of ‘scruffy’ brushes because I like the roughness and to switch brushes for added texture seen in trees. ‘Scruffy’ isn’t necessary, bring what you are comfortable painting with.
- Small, medium and large brushes
- Fan brush with stiff bristles
- If you have small-medium flat comb brushes it saves some time, otherwise a line brush works. *I have made a few of these from old brushes by cutting them.

Paint: *We may not use all of these colors so don’t worry if you don’t have them. I use White, an assortment of Browns, Greens, Yellow, Blue/Purple, Paynes Gray and Black. This is what I will be bringing:
- Soft White (heavy duty or titanium white don’t mix well and generally too harsh for nature
- Paynes Gray
- Black, I like heavy Mars Black to mix with a medium yellow for beautiful shades of green.
- Chromium Oxide Green
- Benzimidazolone Yellow Medium(Golden), or another brands equivalent medium yellow
- ‘blue/greens’ These are optional, it’s possible to mix the other colors for blue/green leaves and water:
- Sap Green Permanent
- Phthalocyanine Blue (Green shade)
- Viridian Hue
- Cerulean Blue *there’s some controversy and shortage at times so any light blue for sky works
- Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold – optional for glow on leaves, can achieve with sienna and yellow
- ‘browns’
- Brown – a medium shade
- Burnt Sienna
- Burnt Umber
- Raw Umber
- Sienna
- Transparent Burnt Sienna
Additional Supplies:
- Image will be provided but you are welcome to bring a simple landscape image of your own to paint (without any buildings or architecture)
- Container for clean water and one to rinse brushes
- 12inch ruler
- Mixing medium – optional. On occasion I use Liquitex Acrylic Medium
- Paper towels or cloth to wipe brushes
- Blue painters tape or green frog tape – optional. I will have extra if needed
- Newspaper or plastic to protect table work area
