Join Clare Scott for 2 days of fun and challenge painting outside, Painting On the Spot!. Clare will emphasize the fundamentals of painting landscapes while you, the artist, is immersed in nature. She will cover how to make a plan for your painting to executing that plan all the while managing the challenges of being in the middle of it all. Clare will offer 1:1 feedback, support and encouragement during the 2 days as well a group discussion, and tips for self critique all in the spirit of experimentation and enjoyment. First and foremost is the recognition that being outside brings awe as well as self-discovery, not judgement. Clare looks forward to taking that 2 day journey with you.
Can all mediums be used? Yes, my expertise is with pastel so I will not be able to answer technical questions about using other mediums but the principles of painting are the same.

Clare scott
As a committed soft pastel painter, Clare Scott, uses a simple combination of pigment and binder to create a painting that expresses her love of color. Painting en plein air informs her studio work of the hues, shapes, atmosphere and the joy of being in the middle of it all. She uses a painterly style of mark making that is loose and spontaneous; evoking the wonder, feeling and beauty of being outside. Her focus is the constant transition between permanence and change in nature.
The legacies of Edger Payne, Emily Carr, Henry Hensche, the California Impressionists, the Taos Society of Artists provide direction for her inspiration. Clare is represented by Mary Williams Fine Arts in Boulder CO and is a member of Sync Gallery, Art District on Santa Fe, Denver, CO

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS:
- Backpack, or roller bag. Backpacks allow you more mobility but only if it is comfortable to carry otherwise a roller bag or small cart with wheels
- Medium of choice, watercolor, acrylic, oil, pastel, etc. What are the basic colors or palette you use? Include those colors that give you a range of value and options of cool to warm (or a way to mix color that gives you that range). Include materials that you use for an underpainting. What supplies do you need to use your medium, brushes, paper towels, extra rag, water, etc.?
- *Painting surface, panel, paper etc. Bring 2-3 just in case…..
- *Easel, a way to support your panel, paper (on a board) while you paint.
- Your set up should allow you to be comfortable but also allow you to step back from your painting to get a better view. Standing gives you the most flexibility to see your work and the area around you but lots of great painters sit while painting.
- Camera or phone camera to document your location choice and your process.
- *Small sketch book and chisel marker such as a Prismacolor to create a value or Notan of your subject. One black marker (90% min.) is plenty. To experiment with value sketches bring 3 values, 90%, 50% and 30%. If you purchase a value range be sure to chose all warm or all cool, black and grey.
- *A template, card, or something similar that is the same aspect as your intended painting to draw an outline for your sketch:
- 3:4=9×12 painting, 4:5=8×10 painting 1:1 square
- Small bag for tools you use to start and finish a painting, pencil, masking tape, eraser, straight edge etc.
- *Apron
- *Bug repellent
- *Hat with brim to shade your eyes
- *Water
- Snack
- *Sun-screen
- Business cards (it is common for people to approach and ask you about your art, painting outside can be a social activity!)
- *Wet wipes to clean your hands and or gloves you use when painting
- Umbrella for painting if you are used to having one with your set up
*required
Miscellaneous
- Throw a chair in your car for lunch, discussion and end of the day round up if there are not picnic tables near by.
- Ask yourself: Can I carry this to my location of choice? Can I bring the supplies I need to use my medium easily and efficiently to create a painting and carry it back so as to leave no trace?
- Once you collect the necessary painting supplies pack it up and see how if feels to transport it a short distance.
- Pro tip. Keep in mind it is impossible to have all the right colors. The good news its not necessary to have the ‘right’ color, staying with the same value but a different color can often work even better.
