Have you ever noticed how some paintings keep your attention by pulling your eyes into the scene, as well as all around? In this workshop you will learn about perspective, both atmospheric and linear, and the leading lines that naturally occur. Learn to harness these lines to keep the viewers eye engaged, and to tell the visual story that you want to portray.
In the first half of this workshop we will look at examples to better understand how artists have used these tools. We will then practice by using quick exercises, followed by using this knowledge to design a larger work of art.
In the afternoon we will transition to creating a larger piece of artwork from design studies done in the morning.
This workshop is not specific to any medium.
Jeanne Hougen
Intrigued by the abstract elements that make up a work of art such as shape, pattern, color, value and texture, Jeanne says that “these are the things that excite me when I interact with the world around me. These are the tools that I draw from when I put my brush to canvas.”
Growing up in the Colorado Mountains with a father who painted was the early inspiration that lead Jeanne into a career in art. Mainly self-taught, Jeanne has participated in numerous art shows where she has won numerous awards. Some of the more notable ones are for 1st place emerging artist, High Plains Art Show, Denver, 2007; Best of Show, Miniatures, Western Spirit Art Show, Old West Museum, Cheyenne, WY, 2011; 2nd place, Colorado Plein Air art Show, Denver, 2012, And 2nd place, as well as Artists’ Choice award at the Wild About Colorado Plein Air Show, Breckenridge, 2016.
Some of Jeanne’s work:
MATERIALS:
- Sketchbook and pencil for note taking, and pencil studies
- 5-6 sheets of watercolor paper, canvas paper, or whatever works in the medium you have chosen to work in.
- A canvas, board, or piece of paper to use for your final project. Again, use what will work for your medium of choice, and in a size that will be comfortable for you. You may not finish this painting in the time allowed, but you want to choose a size that you feel you can at least get blocked in.
- Paint, or drawing supplies in the medium of your choice.
- Image, or images that you would like to paint from. I will have images available to choose from, but you may have something that you would like to paint as well.
